Lymph is a fluid in the human body that circulates through the lymphatic system. After getting a piercing, it is not unusual for some lymph to accumulate around the piercing. The lymph is part of the lymphatic system that goes all around the body so you can expect it on any body part where you make a piercing. The lymph forms when the fluid that lies in the body tissues is collected through lymph capillaries. The composition of the lymph constantly changes as the blood and cells exchange substances. Lymph has several important roles in the organism, among others, to protect the body and destroy bacteria. Another role of the lymph is to return proteins and excess fluid back to the bloodstream. Lymph is very important for the health of the entire body.

Those with new piercings will likely encounter lymph. Since piercings are essentially wounds, they will secrete lymph until they are fully healed. The lymph will secrete through the new piercing hole and can accumulate around the piercing and the jewelry. Once secreted, the lymph will dry out and form a hard mass around the piercing and jewelry. Some of this deposit may also contain bacteria, dirt and other microorganisms. This is why it’s important to remove this accumulation regularly. In order to protect your piercing and prevent infections, it is vital to clean the deposit only using saline soaks. These are gentle enough not to hurt your new piercing in healing. Some people choose to simply remove the accumulating with plain water. Once you remove the accumulated lymph and other deposits, make sure to leave your new piercing alone. This is the best way to let it heal on its own and without further issues and problems.
