Hypertrophic Scar

Hypertrophic scar is a piercing scar that form when there is an excessive amount of collagen that produces a raised appearance. Hypertrophic scars are raised scars but not as much as the keloid scars. Hypertrophic scars tend to be red and elongated but they don’t spread so far away from the piercing like keloid scars do. It is possible to say that hypertrophic scars are less serious than keloids and can be removed more easily. A hypertrophic scar can form around a piercing. Typically, these scars form around new piercings in healing but even old, well-established piercings can develop these scars.

Hypertrophic scars are a consequence of the excessive collagen production. It is not uncommon for these scars to be itchy or even painful. Despite their raised, red appearance these scars are relatively easy to remove or at least they are easier to remove than the more serious keloid scars. Sometimes, if you notice them developing and if you act fast, you can stop them from spreading. Unlike keloid scars, hypertrophic scars may not have to be removed by medical professionals. However, this depends on how the big and serious they are so you are highly advised to seek medical help. In any case, it is vital to closely monitor your piercings so you can notice any scar forming so you can react as soon as it starts developing.
