Disinfectant

Disinfectant is an agent that can be applied on the surface of the skin with the purpose of destroying microorganisms. Disinfectants are anti-microbial so they can kill many different types of microorganisms, though they don’t necessarily kill them all. This is important to note because a lot depends on the type of disinfectant used. Keep in mind that there are many effective disinfectants that can be used for piercing purposes. Some are used by piercers during the piercing procedure while others can be used by clients to keep their piercings clean. However, it is important to remember that disinfectants are less effective than sterilization. For the purpose of piercing procedures disinfectants are effective enough so it is important to use them. In fact, a piercer who doesn’t use a disinfectant is not reliable and you should never get pierced at a studio that doesn’t use disinfectants.

Another type of an agent that you may be interested in is a sanitizer. A sanitizer is similar to a disinfectant but it also cleans the skin surface. In a way, it can be said that a sanitizer contains both a disinfectant and a cleaner. Piercers can choose whether to use a separate cleaner and a disinfectant during the preparation of the piercing procedure and after it. Clients can use sanitizers and disinfectants when needed. However, keep in mind that strong disinfectants and other similar agents are typically not needed during the healing time. Simple saline soaks can be used to treat a new piercing so it can heals properly. Using stronger agents may be counter-productive so make sure not to overdo it.
